Savanna Grand Arôme
Falling for the charm of this unusual spirit.
At the start of the new millennium, La Maison du Whisky primarily sold whisky. And with good reason! In addition to Scotland, Ireland and the United States, Japan had just entered the market with a bang. Our interest in rum was somewhat in passing. Few of the rums we had tasted had blown us away and we knew little about the subject at the time.
In 2002, we opened a new store in Saint Denis, on Réunion Island. And it was there that we tasted a rum from a small local distillery, Savanna. It was a stunning, little gem and we became immediate converts! That rum was a Grand Arôme. And it was with this product that La Maison du Whisky entered the world of rum. More than 15 years later, we are still die-hard fans today! Grand Arômes are the French equivalent of the British High Esters. This appellation denotes traditional molasses rums with a minimum of 800 g of non-alcohol compounds, including 500 g of esters per hectolitre of pure alcohol.
The fermentation process is the backbone of any Grand Arôme.

Its aromatic palette is impressive from start to finish. The serenity with which it reveals its fruity, floral, spicy and lemony character and the way in which it draws heavily on the world of white spirits (apricot and raspberry brandy) are highlights of the tasting.
