Located in the Yilan Valley, in North-East Taiwan, the Kavalan distillerytruly is a land of giants.
The road connecting Taipei and Yilan begins by going through numerous tunnels under the mountains, before crossing a tropical landscape overlooked by rocky summits. The undulating shapes and bright colours of this panorama are straight out of the paintings of the National Museum of Taiwan, which is home to the largest collections of Chinese art in the world.
The valleys then give way to a huge plain, surrounded by rice fields. In the distance, we can see the Yilan Valley and the distillery’s huge building, where we can already clearly make out the name KAVALAN printed on the side in block capitals. From the outside, the building is modern and imposing. From the inside, it seems even bigger! The first building, which is home to the Convention Centre, is not dissimilar to Macallan’s Elchies House… only ten times larger! Spanning various floors, this conference centre can hold hundreds of people, under its ten metres high ceiling. The ambition of owner Mr Lee is already plain to see.
The fruit of its founder’s boundless passion, the distillery was designed to be a giant right from the start.
